Welcome to Our Farm!

When we first started Eight Gates Farm in Chapel Hill NC, we kept it simple and focused on growing one crop: hay. From there, Barbara's love for peonies inspired her to plant numerous flowering bushes that bloom in April and May. Now, we’re thrilled to sell our lovely flowers to our favorite local florist every season.

After becoming certified beekeepers, we started Iron Feather Apiary here on the farm, producing our one-of-a-kind wildflower honey from our beehives. Along with our farm-fresh eggs, we grow a variety of small-batch seasonal crops, including bell peppers, eggplants, and our delicious Tamopan persimmons as our fall treat. Our honey, eggs, and seasonal fruits and vegetables are available for purchase. Give us a call to inquire about availability, or visit our farm in person!

In addition to our produce, we also host local events here in Chapel Hill at our roomy event venue, the Blue Heron Barn. Call us today to reserve the barn for your own event! Our farm is also the home of Iron Feather Studio, Barbara's freestanding studio dedicated for fine metalwork and enameling. Ask about classes and future residencies!

We're farm-owners Barbara McFadyen & Douglass Phillips.

What our clients say

“Iron Feather Apiary pure raw honey was the best area raw honey my wife and I have tasted. It is true raw honey with that natural smell and taste that can’t be beat! Best served by itself on a spoon or on top of a hot biscuit for breakfast!”
